Megan Oliphant was a schoolgirl when the war started. After her brother’s death she continued writing to his best friend, Steven Caraford. Now the war is over and she is about to go to college and embark on a promising career of her own.

Steven has longed for the day when he can return to Scotland and continue the life he loves, farming at Willowburn, with his family. He is dismayed to find he is no longer welcome there. Although it will mean long days, little money, and no security his heart’s desire is to have a farm of his own. He is surprised when he meets Megan again and discovers she has grown into a lovely young woman with a promising future and admirers who can give her far more than he could. He considers pursuing a lucrative career himself and sacrificing his lifelong ambition to farm but a crisis almost tears his world apart.
