It follows the exploits of two Glaswegian families on their budget holiday in Nice, as they struggle to come to terms with each other, with France and with the French. When they return to Glasgow two weeks later their lives have changed in bizarre and unexpected ways. Sheila, Gavin and their son Alan are invited to spend a holiday with Madge and husband Stuart, totally unaware of just quite how shaky their friends' relationship is. Madge herself mainly wants to improve her French, whilst Stuart is biding his time until the end of the holiday and doing his utmost not to be left alone with his wife. Packed full of incident and bursting with neat twists and turns this is a wonderfully rich, funny and human novel.
