Ellen's Spellin - A Doric Poem by Phyllis Goodall

Poem and illustration called 'Ellen's Spellin'

Ellen's spellin's unco queer,
She his ae wye o spellin 'heer'
An twa-three wyes of spellin 'gear',
An neen of them's the richt wye.

Ryan can be very tryin
When he's spellin wirds like 'dyin';
Shoud he keep the 'e' or 'i' in?
An neither een's the richt wye.

Penny's sair perplexed b' 'people'
Surely it is sib tae 'steeple'
An its rael close kin tae 'beetle'
Twa 'e's maun be the richt wye.

Tam is terrible taxed b' 'tourist',
Twa 'o's in there is surely surest
Because it rhymes wi soorest, doorest,
It's bound tae be the richt wye.

Bit Ellen's spellin's affa coorse -
Fit like is yours?
