Helen was born in Glasgow in 1937. When war broke out in 193 she and her elder sister, Meg, were evacuated - originally to separate locations. Towards the end of 1944 all the evacuees in her home returned to Glasgow but she and her sister stayed behind. Some six weeks later they were collected by their father and fostered privately. However, by June, these placements had broken down, and Helen and her sister were handed into the care of Glasgow Corporation.
This book tells the story of Helen's journey from the age of two to eighteen, which includes her 18 moves between her own home, evacuation, foster and Glasgow Corporation homes; including her nightmare journey through Foresthall Hospital, known locally as the "poorhouse".
Helen married in 1956 and has two sons and four grandchildren. Widowed in 1985 she now lives in Edinburgh.
