John Macmurray

The philosophy of John Macmurray is only now receiving the attention it deserves. It is in the contemporary climate of dissatisfaction with individualism that Macmurray's emphasis on the relations of persons has come to the fore. Moreover, his recognition of the importance of human embodiment is being favourably received in a wide range of fields, including philosophy, theology and psychology. Macmurray's overriding concern is to present an adequate account of the person, but his work also addresses concerns in education, art and science, which all stem from his understanding of human agency. This leads him into a discussion of the ethics of personal and political relations and a critique of otherworldly religion - informed by his own fairly unconventional religious beliefs.
