The fourth artist to take part on the Tate St Ives artist in residence programme is the sculptor Nick Evans (b 1976). Employing a range of media from resin to hand-built ceramic sections, his composite objects made up of abstract and figurative elements can be seen as metaphors of human experience. Evans constructs new narratives within these installations which question how social freedoms and constraints define the human condition and personal responses to it. The Tate St Ives artist residency is an important initiative supporting artists in the development of their personal practice. Partou Zia, Gedd Quinn and Kerstin Kartscher have all previously occupied the position. The Porthmeor Studios in St Ives were first occupied by artists in 1904 and have since hosted an impressive list of names including Borlase Smart, Ben Nicholson and Patrick Heron. Living and working in Glasgow, Evans is associated with the next generation of artists to come through the Glasgow School of Art. His eclectic practice probes the history of sculpture whilst decoding contemporary social, political and cultural representations. This publication will explore the work created by Nick Evans during his time spent in residence and will accompany a Tate St Ives exhibition.
