The Museum of Scotland has inspired another Edinburgh writer, John Fardell

From The Flight of the Silver Turtle by John Fardell:

Zara and ben had spent many hours in this museum... The building was packed with some many brilliant things - stuffed animals of every description, dinosaur fossils, ancient artefacts from every part of the globe - and Zara loved it all, but it was up here, at the top of the Main Hall that had always been her favourite place in the museum. The bird's-eye view had often led her to imagine being able to fly, able to swoosh around the space and weave in and out of the pillars.

Leave the the museum and head left towards George IV Bridge. On the other side of the road there is almost always a gaggle of tourists standing with cameras pointed at a small statue of a dog.
