School Story

How would Ralph, Piggy, jack and the other boys in Lord of the Flies have turned out had they not been marooned, but gone on to their public schools like ordinary privileged children? In 1941 seven apprehensive thirteen year-olds enter Ansell's, the most respected house at a famous public school. Like them, the reader is inducted into its claustrophobic, arcane traditions, which, with frightening credibility, educate them insidiously into intellectually, morally sexually corrupt senior boys. The reader is witness to the shocking tragedy that is precipitated and spectator to the shameful aftermath which still haunts the narrator.
