This volume brings together a team of contributors, who were each asked to prepare their chapter with a particular slant, so that Scottish education at all levels could be related to change. This is as much a book about the history and ethnology of Scottish education as about education itself, with a strong emphasis on changes in attitudes of male adults towards the young as well as the role of women in education. It is a thematic form of social history which can be taken as an incisive exemplar.
