In March 1961 USS Proteus arrived at Dunoon. The US Navy base was to dominate the Cowal peninsula for the next 30 years. Views of its presence varied. The fears of many locals of the consequences of a nuclear submarine facility on their doorstep did not seem to affect their welcome of American personnel and their families.
