After the dramatic events of October 1881, when a violent storm devastated the village of Eyemouth in the Scottish borders, the villagers have slowly started to rebuild their lives. Inconsolable with grief at the loss of her husband, Rosabelle Maltman has moved to London to start a new life, leaving her son Aaron behind. There she sets up in business with the mysterious Rachelle, a well-connected and glamorous figure with a flair for business, who recognizes Rosabelle's talent for clothes design. In Eyemouth, Rosabelle's sister-in-law Jessie uses her own, very different talents to manipulate the menfolk of the village, causing many a raised eyebrow. But it is their mother-in-law Effie, whose loss was the greatest, who is the lynchpin of the family, caring for both their children and helping the other fisher-women to rebuild their homes for the future.
