Alexander McNair has been a changed man since he visited the island of Tora, which he is to inherit from his Uncle James. Not only is he now heir to the Strathcairn estate, but also the discovery of his son has precipitated his marriage to Victoria Liversidge, whom he met and seduced on Tora. As the couple vanish abroad on honeymoon, Alexander hopes he will be able to forget Mhairi-Anne Graham - The Witching Woman - who claimed his heart during his island visit.
