Upon This Rock

The year is 1571. Scotland is torn by civil war. The nation’s Reformation is in its fragile infancy. The Catholic Mary Queen of Scots is imprisoned in England, and Scotland is being governed by a Protestant Regent, in the name of young King James. George Buchanan, scholar, poet and royal tutor, uses all of his formidable powers to realise his personal vision and the destiny of the boy-king – the union of the thrones of Scotland and England.

On Dumbarton Rock a small garrison remains loyal to Mary Queen of Scots. Under Lord Fleming and Archbishop Hamilton, those few men hold the key to the kingdom. This is the one place where a Catholic army might land and retake Scotland for Mary and the Church of Rome.

Duncan Robertson, a Highland archer of the beleaguered garrison, sets out to avenge a savage injustice perpetrated on his Irish sweetheart… and so affects the course of history.
