Publisher of the Month: Cargo Publishing

One of Scotland's newest and most dynamic publishers, Cargo was founded in 2009 with the aim of creating a new publishing voice inspired by the likes of Rebel Inc, Clocktower Press and Canongate.

The house has expanded quickly to include Cargo Crate, Scotland's first dedicated digital label, and the Margins Book & Music Festival among the current projects.

Chosen as one of the most innovative publishers in the UK by GQ Magazine, they have twice featured in The List Magazine's Hot 100 and won the magazines 2011 Best Newcomer award. They have been nominated for the Scottish Book of The Year award and the Sunday Mail Young Scot of The Year award.

Cargo's authors for 2012 include Michael Morpurgo, Julia Donaldson, Will Self, Roddy Doyle, Ewan Morrison, Amy Bloom, Jackie Kay, Edwin Morgan, Louise Welsh and many more. The two imprints produce fiction, non-fiction, art books, mixes of fiction and non-fiction, selected poetry, short stories and apps/enhanced ebooks for iPhone and iPad.

The 2012 Margins Book & Music Festival saw 70 artists perform including Alasdair Gray, Don Paterson, William McIllvanney, Chris Brookmyre, Tom Leonard, Malcolm Middleton, Roddy Woomble, Aidan Moffat and Withered Hand.

Since 2011, they have been publishers of the Dundee International Book Prize, the largest cash prize in the UK for an unpublished author at £10,000. The 2012 prize is judged by Stephen Fry, Philip Pullman, Alan Bissett and Jenny Brown.
