Giglets SmartReads
Giglets launched themselves into the ebook marketplace only last year and published fourteen illustrated and adapted classics in a short six-month period. The team then developed the animated SmartReads titles to take full advantage of new ereader technology.
The Giglets team have recently had their efforts in innovation recognised, winning the e-commerce/retail category of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise (SIE) national New Ventures competition in March 2012. SIE is the national organisation for promoting and supporting enterprise and entrepreneurship in Scotland’s universities.
The first title to be released in the SmartReads series was an adaptation of JM Barrie’s classic Peter Pan. The SmartReads ebooks are sometimes famous and sometimes nearly forgotten classics that have been re-imagined and adapted for a modern audience. In Peter Pan, the story is shortened and modernized and key scenes are brought to life through animations of the children, Neverland and the infamous Captain Hook.
SmartReads The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Speckled Band is a modernized adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s original mystery and features Sherlock Holmes in his original investigative brilliance. Giglets SmartReads hold on to the highs, the action and the fun, the great characters and the best scenes from stories that have been loved for years.
Giglets has also been working in collaboration with the Gaelic Books Council and Storlann to create Gaelic editions of their stories. SmartReads Gaidhlig Sgeulachdan Sherlock Holmes Am Bann Breac is a Gaelic adaptation of the SmartReads Sherlock Holmes title. The Giglets team are over the moon with the initial response to this first animated Gaelic title and look forward to making many more.
The latest title in the SmartReads series is an animated adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. By adapting such a well-known yet complicated story, Giglets hope to encourage reading, spread the knowledge of classic literature to a modern audience and play a part in improving literacy.
