History Press - Publisher of the Month

The History Press is the UK’s largest local and specialist history publisher. Our oldest imprint, Phillimore, was founded in 1897 and together our publishing businesses have over 200 years’ experience. This impressive heritage provides the foundation for our publishing principles: to produce well-written books of the highest quality, accessible to the widest possible readership.

Each year we publish over 200 new local history titles and provide an unparalleled range. From Aberdeen to Penzance, our local titles cover the length and breadth of the UK, from personal reminiscences to sporting heroes and from legends to law-breakers. Our books make you look at where you live in a whole new light.

The Little Book of Glasgow

Included in our current catalogue is The Little Book of Glasgow by Geoff Holder, a prolific author of all things Scottish – including the popular Guide to Mysterious series – and the new columnist for the Evening Times newspaper.

The Edinburgh Book of Days by Michael T.R.B. Turnbull takes you through the year day-by-day, recalling quirky, eccentric, amusing and important events and facts from different periods of the city’s history. Ideal for dipping into, this addictive little book will keep you entertained and informed.

Miles Tubb and John McCaughie, who run the Living Memory Association in Edinburgh, have compiled Edinburgh In Old Photographs, which features over 180 archive images tracing some of the changes and developments that have taken place in the city during the last century and beyond. Each image is accompanied by a detailed caption, bringing the past to life and describing many aspects of life in Edinburgh as it once was, including chapters on schooldays, work, sport and celebrations.

Haunted Stirling

Haunted Stirling by local ghost walk conductor David Kinnaird and Haunted Aberdeen & District by the ever-prolific Geoff Holder are just two of the recent titles in our incredibly popular Haunted series. Containing a terrifying collection of spine-chilling tales, from spooky sightings in pubs and theatres to paranormal investigations in cinemas and private homes, each book in this 100-strong series is guaranteed to appeal to both serious ghost hunters and those who simply fancy a fright.

For those who prefer something a little more sinister, A Grim Almanac of Glasgow by Lynne Wilson is a day-by-day catalogue of 365 ghastly tales from around the city. From explosions, tragic accidents, murder, arson, theft and suicide, this almanac explores the darker side of Glasgow’s past.

Highland Folk Tales

Due out in April, Highland Folk Tales by Bob Pegg gathers together a selection of tales and legends from the deepest corners of the Highlands which reflect the wisdom of the countryside and its people, formed from early attempts to explain the natural and spiritual world.

Compiled by Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum, A History of Stirling in 100 Objects by Elspeth King features 100 objects that each show a different aspect of Stirling's history. This book will appeal to everyone interested in finding out more about Stirling through its material culture, or anyone seeking to identify and cherish the objects which make their part of the world distinctive and special.

The King's Park Irregulars

As well as our established local history titles, we are proud to present our newest imprint, The Mystery Press, featuring a dynamic and growing list of crime fiction titles. Venturing into the realm of crime fiction publishing is an exciting new venture for us, and after many years producing popular true crime titles, it is a logical progression. One of our forthcoming titles is The King’s Park Irregulars by David Wilson. When Abigail Craig's friend, retired solicitor Alasdair Mills, is burgled and his prized possession, a pair of slippers that once belonged to Sir Walter Scott, is stolen, her life changes forever. The police have no leads so Alasdair convinces Abigail that they should do some investigating to track down the thieves themselves. Added to that, Abigail has a new lodger who is about to embark on a fresh career of her own, and Aladsair's wife, Sophie, is up to her eyes organising the inaugural 'High Tea in the Park' event in the city. When Abigail and Alasdair stumble across something more sinister, and Alasdair goes missing, things take a turn for the worse and threaten to derail the biggest event to hit Stirling for decades

This is just a selection of varied titles we offer. To explore our complete range of books for your area, go to http://www.thehistorypress.co.uk and navigate your way around our map to discover even more titles.
