Mairi Hedderwick
Mairi Hedderwick was born in Gourock, and attended the Edinburgh College of Art, but she will forever be associated with the Hebridean island of Coll.
The Islands of Coll and Struay
Mairi Hedderwick explains how the small Hebridean island of Coll inspired Katie Morag's island of Struay in a short article for the Visit Coll website. Struay is an amalgam of various Hebridean islands, but Hedderwick insists that the characters in the first Katie Morag books were inspired by real people from Coll.
The isle of Call is about four miles west of Mull, and just north of Tiree. The island is approximately 13 miles long, and 4 miles at its widest.
