Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children's Books: 2005 Shortlist
The nine titles shortlisted for honours in the new awards to celebrate Scottish children’s books were announced on Friday 5th may.
The inaugural Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children’s Books is divided into three categories, with three books shortlisted in each category, reflecting the strength and depth of contemporary Scottish children’s books. The categories and shortlisted titles are as follows:
Early Years (0-7)
- Charlie Cook's Favourite Book - Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
- The Sea Mice and the Stars - Kenneth Steven and Louise Ho
- Little Lost Cowboy - Simon Puttock and Caroline Jayne Church
Younger Readers (8-12)
- Deep Water - Debi Gliori
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - JK Rowling
- The Sign of The Black Dagger - Joan Lingard
Older Readers (12-16)
- The Drowning Pond - Catherine Forde
- Roxy's Baby - Catherine MacPhail
- Green Jasper - KM Grant
The shortlisted titles – all of which were published in 2005 by authors or illustrators born or resident in Scotland – were chosen by a panel of experts from the realms of literature and education. The books will be read by young people in reading groups at schools, libraries and bookshops across Scotland during this year’s autumn school term, with the children themselves voting for their favourite book thereafter.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Monday, November 27 at the new Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh. Each of the three winners will receive a cash prize of £1,000, with runners-up collecting £200 each.
