I settled back in my place, recharged the three pistols I had fired, and kept watch with both eye and ear. A minute later there came a shrill call on the sea-pipe. A knot of men, cutlasses in hand, made a rush against the door. At the same moment someone kicked in the glass of the skylight. A man leaped through and fell sprawling on the floor. Before he could get to his feet, I clapped a pistol to his back. He whipped straight round and grabbed for me, roaring out an oath. I gave a shriek and shot him in the body. He gave a horrible groan and fell to the floor.
