School Competition: Making Books in Scotland
The People Behind the Pages - Making Books in Scotland
A Celebration of Authors, Publishers, Printers, Booksellers and Librarians
A new exhibition, The People Behind the Pages, opens on Saturday 13 September 2008 and runs until 17 January 2009 at the Museum of Edinburgh, 142 Canongate, Royal Mile, Monday to Saturday, 10.00-17.00. The exhibition is curated by the Scottish Archive of Printing and Publishing History Records (SAPPHIRE).
The exhibition celebrates the work of authors, publishers, printers, booksellers and librarians in creating books for readers. It contains material on these occupations of the book, using film and sound clips featuring a diversity of voices and roles.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is a display of the stages in the development of a book from conception to sale. The book featured is Rabbie's Rhymes by James Robertson and Matthew Fitt to be published by Itchy Coo, the Scottish publisher. There are worksheets for school parties and children available at the exhibition.
Edinburgh primary schools are being invited to participate in a 'design your own book cover' competition with prizes in three age groups - P1 and 2, P3 to 5, and P6 and 7 - being awarded at a ceremony at the exhibition in January.
