Attitudes to Language and Language Policies in Scotland before and after Devolution
Renvall Institute
Unioninkatu 38 A 109, Helsinki, Finland
Academic Atina Nihtinen will give a lecture on changing attitudes to Scots as part of a lecture series that will be held at the Renvall Institute, Helsinki during the next few months. Nihtinen has a long standing interest in the language situation in Scotland and recently visited Shetland to research local attitudes to language and identity. In her latest project Nihtinen will compare Shetland with Tornedal and Åland. The Tornedal region of Sweden has a minority language community who speak a local version of Finnish known as Meänkieli (our language), and Åland is a semi-autonomous Swedish speaking island group which is part of the Finnish state.
