TV Catchphrase Quiz
Here's a quiz: which television shows popularised these words or phrases?
- keep 'em peeled
- marmalize
- jumpers for goalposts
- correctamundo!
- let's be careful out there
- turbolift
- I love it when a plan comes together
These were some of the entries I didn't instantly recognize in TV Talk (Chambers £7.99), a new book subtitled 'a dictionary of words and phrases popularized by television'. Skimming the book, you will soon come across something deriving from The Fast Show, the 90s sketch series which has probably dropped more catchphrases into the popular consciousness than any other British show.
Though the book describes itself as a dictionary, it is more of a collection of mini-articles on TV programmes which have left their mark on the language, from Dixon of Dock Green's 'Evenin' all' to Little Britain's 'I want that one!' Potted histories of the shows are rounded off with typical plotlines and unusual facts. This makes it a good dipping-in book for the bedside table or the loo library. The dictionary is good on TV sports slang (stramash, early doors etc). A centre section also traces some of the best know TV advertising phrases.
Answers: 1 Police Five 2 The Ken Dodd Show 3 The Fast Show 4 Happy Days 5 Hill Street Blues 6 Star Trek 7 The A Team
